Second Floor Studios & Arts – [SFSA]

About SFSA

Who we are

Second Floor Studios & Arts – [SFSA] is a London-based social enterprise company and ‘not-for-profit’ project that supports the development of visual and fine art practice, and craft and designer making by providing affordable studio space to artists.

Our goal

is to champion the needs of artists and the vital importance of affordable studio space.

Our aims

•  to provide artists with affordable studios and resources they need to sustain their practice.

•  provide a supportive environment in which our members can flourish.

•  to build creative partnerships and initiatives with local and national arts organisations, businesses and authorities.

•  deliver a wide range of educational and outreach projects enabling diverse groups of people and individuals to participate in, learn through and work in visual arts, crafts and design.

Founded by Matthew Wood and Kelvin O’Mard in 1997 who had previously met at Goldsmiths College, SFSA was established as a direct response from both their personal struggles to find affordable studio space locally. The shortage of spaces available to the arts community was mainly due to the increasing numbers of artists’ studios being lost to redevelopment of sites, and a lack of strategic planning and provision within local authorities, creating a chronic shortage of affordable space for artists to work.

Over the last 13 years SFSA has continually met the challenge to find and secure space for artists to practice and has grown from a self-funded project into a significant independent ‘not-for-profit’ arts management company and affordable studio space provider for South East London.

SFSA is currently working in partnership with Emafyl Properties on a 5-year initiative to develop over 160,000 sq.ft. of vacant space in 7  large industrial units overlooking the Thames near Woolwich. The new development will deliver over 280 self-contained studio units, workshops, education spaces, open access fine art print studio and gallery, creating one of Europe’s largest centres of affordable studio space for artists and craft and designer makers.

Second Floor Studios & Arts are members of the National Federation of Artists’ Studio Providers www.nfasp.org.uk
